INDUSTRY NEWS From RR Donnelley Weekly Collator Volume
6:
No. 26 / June 26, 2006
ECONOMY
Leading Indicators Slid Last Month (Wall Street Journal – June 22,
2006)
According to the Conference Board, its composite index of leading
indicators declined by 0.6% in May to 137.9, after a modest 0.1%
decrease in the prior month. The May reading contrasted with the
0.5%
median decline estimate of 15 economists surveyed by Dow Jones
Newswires. The Conference Board noted that three of the ten
indicators that make up the leading index showed improvement for
May.
The largest positive contributors came from manufacturers’ new
orders
for non-defense capital goods. The biggest negative contributors
were
the average weekly initial claims for unemployment insurance, the
index of consumer expectations, real money supply, and average
weekly
factory hours.
MAGAZINES
New Magazine Data Will Help Enable Reach Comparisons (Media Daily
News
– June 26, 2006)
A new service by Readership.com is beginning to provide audience
accumulation data for magazine readership, which will enable
advertisers and agencies to compare how the print medium builds
audience reach. A spokesperson from Readership.com compares what
the
company is doing for magazines to what Nielsen has always done for
television. The official launch of Readership.com coincides with a
similar system being tested by Mediamark Research Inc., which
recently
began conducting weekly web-based consumer surveys to supplement
its
standard surveys upon which many magazine advertisers rely. This
new
data could bring new insight on how people read magazines and
could
also affect future advertising trends.
RETAIL
Same-Store Sales Up 4.4% in May (Retail Forward – June 2006) May
same-store sales grew 4.4%, down from April’s 6.7% increase but up
from last May’s 2.9% increase. May results for same-store sales
defied fears of a consumer spending slow down. Many retailers
reported better than expected results. Department stores led the
way
with nearly a 7% increase in same-store sales, while sectors
targeted
at lower income households lagged.
Crime Rings Become Fashion in Retail Theft (Milwaukee Journal
Sentinel
– June 17, 2006)
Last year, U.S. retailers lost close to $37.4 billion worth of
merchandise to theft. The 2005 National Retail Security Survey
found
that only 10% of the retailers who responded have an organized
retail
crime task force, while one-third of companies are tracking
organized
retail crime data. The latest poll, however, found that 81% of
companies had been victimized by organized crime. Congress has
authorized spending $5 million for training officers and
investigating
and prosecuting organized retail theft crimes.
BOOKS
Scholastic Study Underscores Technology Use and Parental Influence
(Book Publishing Report – June 19, 2006)
A new study was released last week, which revealed that children
rely
heavily on their parents to find good books and use technology to
read
online. The study also found that children five to eight years old
read more than those nine and older. In fact, the number of
children
who classify themselves as "daily readers" steadily declines
throughout
the teen years. The study also found that those children who do
read
daily are most likely to read on an electronic device. State-
Funded
PreK Movement Maintains Momentum (Educational Marketer – June 19,
2006) Despite recent defeats in both California and Florida, the
PreK
initiative has retained much of its forward momentum. Currently,
38
states fund at least one preschool initiative and the number of
accredited early childhood programs has doubled between 1995 and
2005.
This spring, 24 governors proposed a total of $250 million in
funding
for preschool initiatives in fiscal 2007, compared to 20 governors
last year, of which 19 received more money. State funding for
preschool rose 7.5% between 2002 and 2005, from $2.6 billion to
more
than $2.8 billion. However, the growth in spending has been outpaced
by
pupil enrollment, resulting in decreased spending per pupil.
INDUSTRY NEWS
Condé Nast Selling Three Fairchild Titles (Circulation Management
Magazine – June 21, 2006)
Condé Nast Publications will sell its Supermarket News, Home
Furnishings News and InFurniture titles. The company acquired the
titles in 1999 for a reported $650 million. Approximately 70
editorial
and other staff will be affected by the sale. Elle’s Middle
Eastern
Edition Balances Fashion and Tradition (Wall Street Journal – June
20,
2006) Elle magazine is set to debut its first Middle East edition
this
week. The issue will arrive on newsstands in Lebanon, Jordan and
Morocco on June 23 rd; it will attempt to translate a western brand
to
Middle Eastern norms. Condé Nast Publications Inc., the publisher
of
Vogue and Vanity Fair, does not currently have plans to create
Middle
East editions of any of its other magazines.
