 San Diego Sports Consulting Project

Many students express an interest in working in sports, but they often do not know where to start, and like most industries it is hard to break in without experience. The San Diego Sports Consulting Project is the perfect place to get that experience and begin an exciting career in Sports Management.

In conjunction with the Ohio University Center for Sports Administration, DePaul students will have the opportunity to spend two weeks in San Diego during the first summer session. For the third year they will work with the Padres and other San Diego based professional, collegiate and sports business organizations on a unique sports consulting course.

The San Diego Sports Consulting Project is designed to give students the
opportunity to leverage their business skills as well as develop new ones in an exciting and challenging sports business environment. This course will enhance a student’s knowledge and expertise in the following areas:

• Project/Team Management
• Business Consulting
• Leadership
• Sales Strategy
• Sports Marketing

Once the students arrive in San Diego, the Padres and other sports organizations will present them with various business challenges. The students will be divided into four person teams, joining sports management students from Ohio University and the University of Iowa. Each team will work together to develop detailed marketing plans that will be presented to senior executives during the last two days of the trip.

Over the course of the program, students will visit Petco Park and other venues, attend presentations by industry leaders, conduct on-site research surveys, and learn how to incorporate Scarborough research methods into their plans.
In addition to the San Diego Padres, other organizations set to participate in this year’s project include: University of San Diego Athletics, National Sports Forum, Asics, Farmers Insurance Open/PGA Tour, and the San Diego Chargers (participating organizations are subject to change).

Upon completion of the course, students will have real world experiences and a comprehensive marketing plan they can take to potential employers as an example of what they can accomplish in a sports business setting. DePaul students who have completed the program have gone on to work at the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Newbridge Sports Marketing and Marketing Werks.

Seville Staffing, a woman-owned business located in Chicago’s loop will be participating in a passenger count and customer service survey for Metra. The passenger count will be occurring roughly from March 10th-April 24th. The customer service survey is tentatively scheduled April 9th – June 5th. A tally sheet will be provided to record the data for Metra. This will allow for Metra to get updated ridership numbers on each train line and each station. Those counting PM outbound passengers will start at one of the four downtown terminals and ride the train all the way outbound to the last station served. For both the AM and PM passenger counts, counters will turn in their tally sheet to a project lead who will collect it.

To date, I have used this blog to send information out regarding, higher education, scholarships, internships and employment availability. I will still do that, however, for the next forty (40) I will write about several things, hopefully some of it will help someone move forward, inspire someone to dare to do what their heart truly desires, or just laugh a little bit. This is new to me, so help me out a little bit… Here is goes….

Trust yourself. Think for yourself. Act for yourself. Speak for yourself. Be yourself. Imitation is suicide.” – Marva Collins

This is a powerful quote by a powerful woman, we all truly need to be our true authentic selves in all that we do. Make it a great day on purpose!
